Located less than half an hour’s drive to the west of Pau, the Lacq Industrial Basin came into being in 1951 following the discovery of a gas-field which was to prove to be one of the most important deposits in Europe for over half a century. The Lacq Industrial Basin has undergone a successful conversion procedure through supportive actions, both collective and anticipated, before the commercial shutdown of gas exploitation by TOTAL. Parallel to this historic activity of gas extraction and its marketing, the high level of H2S in the gas permitted the development of thiochemical and industrial chemistry units. This was followed by the emergence of activities for fine chemistry, bioenergies and composite materials which complete the industrial units of this centre of industrial excellence, one of the most important in Europe, supported by the competences in research, development and innovation of major groups such as TOTAL, ARKEMA, TORAY CFE, SOBEGI, AIR LIQUIDE, YARA, CHIMEX, SANOFI, NOVASEP, ABENGOA, etc...
